Workshop at NLU Jodhpur: “Mental Health Matters”

The Student Welfare Board of National Law University, Jodhpur, organized a two-phase workshop titled “Mental Health Matters” on the 3rd and 4th of April, 2025, for the students of the University. The initiative aimed to introduce participants to essential concepts related to mental well-being, stress, trauma, and self-care practices. The sessions were facilitated by Dr. Sheetal Lakhani (Ph.D., NIMHANS; M.Phil., IHBAS), a Clinical Psychologist and Supervisor, and Dr. Gargi S. Kumar (Ph.D., IIT Bombay; M.Phil., Cancer Institute, Chennai; M.Sc., Central University of Hyderabad). Their combined expertise created a rich and insightful learning environment. The workshop sought to raise awareness about mental health, dispel common myths, and provide students with practical tools for emotional and psychological resilience. It began with an engaging icebreaker activity that encouraged students to share relatable experiences, setting the tone for open and empathetic dialogue. Key mental health concepts were introduced and explored through an interactive approach, prompting participants to reflect on their own experiences. Discussions highlighted the mind-body connection, the effects of stress on daily life, and the diathesis-stress model as a framework to understand mental health challenges. Trauma and its impact were also addressed in a manner that was accessible and relevant to students. Throughout the sessions, the facilitators shared a range of practical strategies, including sleep hygiene, mindfulness techniques, emotional regulation, cognitive-behavioral tools, and distress tolerance skills. Students took part in guided exercises such as grounding and controlled breathing, which enhanced the hands-on learning experience. The workshop concluded with an open forum, allowing students to ask questions, share personal coping strategies, and discuss barriers to seeking help. The event was thoughtfully curated and organized by Dr. Manisha Mirdha, Dean Students’ Welfare, along with her team.
