A Conversation on ‘Evasive’ Jurisprudence of Constitutional Interpretation with Prof. (Dr.) Upendra Baxi

On October 20, 2024, the Constitutional Law Society and the Centre for Comparative Constitutional and Administrative Law at NLU Jodhpur hosted a Virtual Interactive Lecture with Padma Shri Prof. (Dr.) Upendra Baxi, one of India’s most distinguished scholars in constitutional law. The session, themed “Is there any such thing as ‘Evasive’ Jurisprudence of Constitutional Interpretation?”, brought together scholars from NLUJ and outside to engage with the complexities of constitutional interpretation and its far-reaching implications. Prof. Baxi, known for his immense contributions to constitutional law, human rights, and legal theory, shared his deep insights on how constitutional doctrines can both confront and avoid difficult legal issues.

Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor Prof. Harpreet Kaur graced the event, lending her support to the engaging discussion. The lecture was conceptualized and moderated by Asst. Prof. Sayantani Bagchi, and Ms. Krishangee Parikh, Executive Editor of the Constitutional Law and Administrative Law Journal (CALJ), led the interactive session that followed and concluded with the vote of thanks.

Participants posed thoughtful questions, raising pertinent issues such as the judiciary’s role in addressing fundamental duties, environmental jurisprudence, judicial appointments etc. Prof. Baxi’s responses were illuminating, filled with historical depth and practical wisdom, sparking meaningful dialogue among the attendees.
