Hon'ble Vice President Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar ji visited NLU Jodhpur

National Law University Jodhpur hosted Hon’ble Vice President of India Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar ji for a speech and interaction with students on 27 September 2023.

The programme commenced with a tree plantation drive on the University campus. Vice Chancellor Madam Harpreet Kaur welcomed the dignitary and gave a brief overview of the University’s progress.
 
Dhankhar ji started his speech by recounting his experiences as a student and practitioner of Law and how his life was transformed by his initial experiences. He talked about the governance of the day possessing transparency, accountability and offering a level playing field.
 
He talked at length about the phenomenal national feats of the successful landing of Chandrayaan 3 and hosting of the G20 summit and how the country’s economy was moving fast from being the 5th largest to the 3rd largest very soon.
 
Dhankhar ji praised the robust judicial system of the day and discussed how remarkably the institution has grown by the contributions of a phenomenal Bar and Bench.
 
Hon’ble Vice President motivated the students to let go off fear of fear and fear of failure and become go getters not using their minds only as a parking place for ideas but going all out to attain their goals.
 
Dhankhar ji was impressed by the remarkable quality of the students and announced that in his capacity as Chairman of Indian Council of World Affairs, he will set in motion the process of signing an MoU with the University for widening the horizons of the students and giving them valuable experiential opportunities.
 
He also magnanimously announced internships for 5 students in Rajya Sabha during the upcoming winter months.
 
Hon’ble VP’s interaction with the students saw meaningful questions and thoughtful responses from Dhankhar ji on issues as diverse as the Women’s Reservation Bill, the G20 summit, the 3 criminal reform bills and the future of constitutionalism in the country.
 
He ended the interaction by congratulating Vice Chancellor Dr. Harpreet Kaur for administering an institution of excellence with a very bright future.

One being questioned by Chaturya Srinivasan of IV year regarding the path from lawyering to public policy making, Dhankhar ji opined that by being bright, morally upright and constantly learning, avenues automatically open for students of law and there was no dearth of opportunities available in the sphere of law.

One being questioned by Samyuktha Venkatesan of II year regarding proposal for replacing civil laws also on the lines of the proposed criminal law bill, Dhankhar ji opined that our laws still have a lot of robustness and life in them and everyday were open to newer interpretations and usage.
