Prof. B. B. Pandey (Law)
Distinguished Professor

Prof. Pande took to Law  teaching in 1962 at the Jabalpur University. His areas of specialisation are Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Law of Evidence, Criminology, Juvenile Justice, Human Rights, Justice Issues and Jurisprudence. He has over 140 published research papers and comments in International and National journals and compilations.

He taught at the University of Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh (1962-70) and  the University of Delhi (1971-2005). He was selected as a  Professor of Law in  the Delhi University in 1988. He has also  taught at  the Lucknow University 1991-1994, and was also  the Dean and Head of the Department of Law in 1993-94.

He has also taught at the Faculty of Law, University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania ( East Africa) 1981-83. He has been a Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Cardiff, Wales (1998) and at the Faculty of Law, University of Hong Kong (1996) the City University of Hong Kong (Sept. to Dec., 2005), in addition the teaching assignments in the Universities, Professor Pande is regularly invited for expert lectures at the National Judicial Academy, Bhopal, the National Police Academy, Hyderabad, The National Institute of Criminology  and Forensic Sciences, New Delhi and large number of other state Academies Universities and Law Schools and Institutes.

He was awarded the Max Planck Fellowship by the Max Planck Institute of International and Foreign Penal Law, Freiburg , Germany (1988, 1992, 1995 & 1997). He has been a member of several advisory committees and was also a UNDP expert consultant to the Rule of Law and Judiciary  Reform Projects of the Kingdom of Nepal in 2000 and 2002. He received the Senior Social Scientist Award (1995) and the Kumarappa-Reckless Award (2002) from the Indian Society of Criminology in October, 2003. He was conferred the Indian Association of Law Firms and Milat "Best Law Teacher Award" in 2015.

Prof. Pande was the  Consultant (Research) at the National Human Rights Commission, New Delhi during 2005 -2007. In the post retirement phase, he found meaningful engagement in lecturing on Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure Law, Evidence Law, Criminology, Human Rights and Juvenile Justice subjects in national law universities and law faculties within and outside the country. He remained associated with the National Law University, Delhi (NLU) in various capacities right from its inception in 2008. He also served the President of the Indian Society of Criminology till 2016.

He strongly believes in lecturing as the best way of building capacities amongst the students and inservice functionaries. His ideas about legal education were in perfect sync with the ideals of the National Academy for Law Teachers set up at the NLU, Delhi in 2012. So far, Prof. Pande has conducted more than five training courses on teaching Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure Law, Evidence Law, Criminology and  Current Developments in Substantive and Procedural Criminal Law, which has benefitted over 300 young law and social science teachers from all over India and the neighbouring countries..

After his NHRC assignment, since 2014, he held the Criminal Law Chair Professorship at the NLU, Delhi till 2017. Currently, he is holding the Distinguished Professor position at NLU, Delhi.

The brief CV would be incomplete without the mention of the two notable academic achievements in the current year 2022, namely: first, as the Expert Consultant to the Committee for Criminal Law Reforms, actively involved with fellow legal experts for over one and a half years, culminating in submission of a report to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt. of India, and second, the release of Prof. Pande's authored book, Criminal Law and Criminal Justice Advanced Legal Writings (published by E.B.C.).
