The increasing depth and breadth of economic relations across nations, states, and continents have given rise to a relatively recent field within modern international law- International Economic Law (IEL). IEL, situated within the domain of public international law, constitutes a collection of mutually agreed-upon principles and norms that regulate interactions between states and other entities on the international stage. The primary objective of these regulations is to facilitate the unrestricted exercise of sovereign rights by states in the realm of international economic relations. Furthermore, IEL is oriented towards fostering equal cooperation among states, irrespective of their socio-economic systems and political regimes. Its overarching goals include promoting the overall economic progress of the planet and, with a specific focus, supporting the advancement of developing countries.
However, as scholars such as V. Friedman have noted the growth of IEL in the sphere of international private law, as a branch not only of public international law, but also part of national law. This extension broadens the scope of the field beyond traditional subjects such as states and multilateral organizations to encompass private entities engaged in commercial relations that transcend national borders.
National Law University, Jodhpur has established the Research and Advisory Centeron International Economic Law (RACIEL) to promote excellence in research, education and training in the area of International Economic Law (IEL). The study of IEL encompasses a vast array of topics ranging from international trade law- with a primary focus on WTO Law/regional economic integration, international intellectual property, business regulation, to private law of international trade, including certain aspects of international commercial law and international taxation, and the law of international finance and investment. RACIEL aims to achieve the following objectives:
1.To achieve excellence in IEL research targeted towards publishing timely research papers, notes and comments as working papers and in journals of international repute.
2.To maintain 'law' and 'legal' research as the primary focus and to develop new perspectives in the legal theory of IEL. Interdisciplinary research can be undertaken as enabling the study and research of IEL.
3.To advise on request from the Government of India and/or different governments/individuals/organisations on matters concerning IEL, both in the area of IEL remedies and policy.
4.To organise the pedagogy of IEL teaching, research and training guided towards special needs and concerns of developing countries and least-developed countries and to conduct advanced and specialised training directed towards achieving sound legal expertise in specific areas of IEL.
5.To build a network of IEL scholars focusing on developing country perspectives and on topical interests in India, South-Asia and the global South.
6.To host legal scholars, practitioners and policy specialists from India and abroad to discuss and share new scholarship, ideas and experiences with an aim to generate and sustain an interdisciplinary debate and to promote free-thinking on emergent issues in IEL and to build institutional linkages.
7.To represent the discipline of IEL in international and national forums guided towards portraying NLU's strengths in research, teaching, training and advice in specific areas IEL.
